Buy X get Y
When a shopper buys products from one list (X), they get products from another list (Y) free or at a discount. It covers BOGO deals, add-on offers and “buy 2, get 1 free”.
Set it up
- In the app, go to Discount Campaigns and click Create a campaign.
- On the Buy X get Y card, click Create.
- Enter a Campaign name. Only you see it.
- Under Customer buys (X), choose Specific products or Collection, pick them, and set the Minimum quantity required.
- Under Customer gets (Y), set the Get Y quantity, choose Specific products or Collection, and pick the reward.
- Set the Discount on Y. 100% makes the reward free; a lower number gives that percentage off.
- Choose Which item gets the discount (see below).
- To cap the offer, tick Set a maximum number of uses per order and enter the Maximum uses per order.
- Check Combinations and set a Schedule if you need one.
- Click Save.
It’s an automatic discount, so shoppers don’t need a code.
How shoppers get the reward
Once the cart meets the “buys” condition, the app helps the shopper claim the reward. This needs the All Discounts & Promotions app embed turned on in your theme.
- One specific reward product: it’s added to the cart automatically. If the cart stops qualifying, the app takes it back out. If the shopper removes it themselves, it isn’t added again until the cart qualifies afresh.
- Several reward products, or a collection: a popup asks the shopper to choose one, such as “Choose your reward”.
The info box at the bottom of the form tells you which of these your setup will use.
The discount is applied at checkout whenever the cart qualifies, however the reward got there. A shopper who adds the reward product themselves still gets it free or discounted.
Which item gets the discount
This matters when the same products appear in both lists, such as “buy 2 chokers, get 1 free” from the same chokers.
- The cheapest qualifying item: the lowest-priced qualifying item in the cart is the reward. This protects your margin. When the lists overlap, the popup tells the shopper the cheapest item is the free one rather than promising their pick.
- The item the customer picks: the product chosen in the reward popup gets the discount, so it matches what the popup promised.
Repeating the offer
New campaigns repeat for every qualifying set. Without a limit, buying 4 on a “buy 2 get 1” offer earns 2 rewards. To stop that, tick Set a maximum number of uses per order and enter 1.
The automatic add puts in one set’s worth of reward items. If the cart earns more rewards, the shopper adds the extra items and the discount covers them at checkout.
Good to know
- Set X and Y to different products if you don’t want shoppers buying several of the same item to claim a reward.
- If another discount wins at checkout and the auto-added reward ends up at full price, the app removes it so the shopper isn’t charged for a “free” item. Check Combinations on both discounts if this happens.
- By default the discount combines with order, product and shipping discounts.
- Buy X get Y is on every plan. On the Free plan, discounts apply to up to 10 orders a month. See Plans and billing.
