Behaviour triggers
Offer a discount, with or without a popup, when a shopper does something on your store: views several products, adds to cart, browses for a while, comes back again or moves to leave. Once the trigger fires, the discount applies automatically at checkout.
Set it up
- In the app, go to Discount Campaigns and click Create a campaign.
- On the Behaviour trigger card, click Create.
- Enter an Internal name (only you see it) and, if you like, a Description.
- Set Published status to Active, or leave it as Draft until you’re ready. Test is covered below.
- Under Behaviour rule, pick the rule in Trigger when and fill in its settings (see the table below).
- Turn on Product discounts, Order discounts or Shipping discounts and enter a value. At least one needs a value above 0. Product discounts can be a percentage, a fixed amount or a free gift.
- Under Experience, choose whether to Show popup before applying discount, and write the Popup heading, Popup body and button text.
- Optionally set Combinations, Maximum redemptions under Usage limits, who the rule applies to under Apply this rule to, and a Schedule.
- Click Save in the bar at the top of the page.
Triggers run through the All Discounts & Promotions app embed, so it must be turned on in your theme.
Rules you can use
| Trigger when | When it fires |
|---|---|
| Viewed products | After the shopper views a number of different product pages in one browsing session, or views products you pick (any or all of them). |
| Wishlist activity (Swym) | After the shopper saves products to their Swym wishlist. Needs the Swym wishlist app. |
| Add to cart | After the shopper adds products to the cart: any products, products you pick, or a set number of products from one collection. |
| Multiple visits without purchase | After a set number of visits within a number of days, with no purchase. The shopper must be logged in to a customer account for the discount to apply. |
| Time on site | After the shopper has browsed for a number of seconds (5 or more). |
| Time on page | After the shopper spends a number of seconds on one page of a chosen Page type: all pages, product pages, collection pages, the cart, the home page, or Custom paths such as /collections/sale or /products/*. |
| Checkout abandonment | When a shopper went to checkout and came back without buying, after the delay you set. You can add a Minimum cart subtotal. |
| Returning visitor | After a set number of visits (2 or more). Visits are counted in the shopper’s browser, so they don’t need to log in. A new visit counts after 30 minutes away. |
| Exit intent | When the shopper moves their mouse to the top of the browser window, as if to leave. You can limit it to product, collection or cart pages. It always shows a popup. |
| Discount code entered | When the shopper applies a code you name on your storefront, a popup lets them choose a free gift. Create a new code here, or use one that already exists in Shopify. |
What shoppers see
With Show popup before applying discount on, the popup appears when the rule fires, and the discount only applies once the shopper clicks the Primary button. With it off, the discount applies straight away without a popup. Either way, shoppers don’t need to type a code: the discount is applied at checkout.
If you choose a free gift that shoppers pick themselves, the popup lists the gifts instead. Extra Gift options let you remove gifts when the shopper no longer qualifies, add more gifts when the rule is met again, or run the rule once per session.
Testing
- Open a saved trigger and click Preview on storefront. Your store opens and the popup shows straight away, even if you dismissed it before.
- A trigger set to Test only runs in Shopify’s theme preview, so real shoppers don’t see it. In preview, its popup comes back even after you close it.
- Test in a private browser window. Triggers remember what a shopper has already been offered.
Good to know
- Each trigger fires once per browsing session. Once a shopper has earned the discount, the trigger doesn’t fire again for them in that browser for 7 days.
- Magic links and QR codes come first. While a shopper has an active magic link or QR code discount, behaviour triggers don’t fire for them.
- Only one popup shows at a time. If several triggers of the same rule match at once, only one fires.
- Exit intent needs a mouse, so it doesn’t fire on phones and tablets.
- Apply this rule to limits the trigger to all visitors, visitors who aren’t logged in, or logged-in customers. Geotargeting lets you allow or block countries, using Shopify’s country detection.
- With Maximum redemptions set, the trigger stops showing once that many orders have used it.
- To see results, open Analytics and click the trigger. You’ll see revenue, orders, average order value, sales by product and each order.
- Behaviour triggers work on every plan. On the Free plan, discounts apply to up to 10 orders a month. See Plans and billing.
